Painting in Breaux Bridge

Breaux Bridge, the St. Martin Parish town titled “Crawfish Capital of the World” back in 1959, is a short run east of Lafayette, inside our normal no-trip-fee range.

Part of its appeal is its age: in and around the historic downtown, Breaux Bridge keeps a stock of older wood-sided homes with deep porches and real trim. Houses like that reward a painter who prepares properly and punish one who doesn’t: old coatings need washing, scraping and sanding back to a sound edge, bare wood needs primer, and soft trim should be repaired before color ever goes on.

One more thing owners of older homes should know: if a house predates 1978, its old layers may contain lead-based paint, and federal rules set specific lead-safe work practices for disturbing them. It is worth raising at the consultation: we walk the house, explain what the surfaces need, and put the whole plan in a written proposal before work is scheduled.

Repainting an older South-Louisiana home

  1. 01

The age of the paint matters, not just the age of the house

Homes built before 1978 may carry lead-based layers under newer coats. Federal renovation rules require lead-safe practices when those layers are disturbed: ask any contractor how they handle pre-1978 surfaces before sanding starts.

  2. 02

Old wood outlasts new wood, if it’s kept primed

Original old-growth siding is often better material than anything sold today. The maintenance contract is simple: never leave it bare. Scraped or repaired spots get primed promptly, or humidity starts the failure cycle again.

  3. 03

Porch ceilings and floors are their own system

Deep porches live half-outdoors: ceilings do well in finishes that handle moisture movement, and wood floors need porch-rated enamel or stain-and-seal; interior products fail there in a season.
